General Anesthesia (GA) / Unconscious Sedation

Nowadays, general anesthesia in Adults / Children (being put to sleep) is a treatment available for all. For most adults / children, general sedation works acceptably well. If sedation fails then GA can be provided. General Anaesthesia is used to perform root canal therapy procedures or even to have a complete cosmetic makeover done. What are General Anesthesia and Deep Sedation?

General anesthesia (GA) is when you are totally unconscious. In this state, you can't feel any pain. You can't reliably breathe on your own, so for more complex procedures (such as fillings - these are actually more complex than extractions under GA!) and procedures of longer duration you need to having a "breathing tube" inserted. Deep sedation is a state of depressed consciousness, where you may lose the ability to breathe independently and you can't respond to verbal commands. However, you can still feel noxious stimuli like pain, so local anesthesia is necessary.

SEDATION DENTISTRY

Sedation dentistry is used to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for nervous people receiving dental treatment. It may be the answer if you are reluctant to change the appearance of your smile because you are afraid or anxious about undergoing long or complicated dental procedures while totally awake. Sedation dentistry can make you feel comfortable with little memory of the treatment, helping you achieve a smile you can be proud of. According to the Dental Organisation for Conscious Sedation (DOCS Education) 30% of the population avoids the dentists due to fear. This “dental phobia” prevents people receiving necessary routine dental care, potentially compromising the health of their mouth and smile. We offer two types of sedation for routine and more complex dental procedures. Oral sedation is where you simply take a tablet. Intravenous (IV) sedation is where the sedation is injected, usually in the back of the hand. Both have a similar effect but the intravenous sedation makes you more relaxed and drowsy under more controllable conditions. Patients often say it feels as if they were asleep during their treatment.

GENERAL ANESTHETIC DENTISTRY

General Anesthetic is suitable for many patients who, for a number of good reasons, are undergoing treatments requiring more than a Local Anesthetic or Sedation. This may be due to the type of treatment, but is especially recommended for nervous and phobic patients who would prefer not to be conscious during their treatments. If you are unsure which method of sedation or Anesthesia would be best for you, or if you have any concerns, our specialists will be happy to speak with you. Both of these options require prior completion of our Medical Questionnaire with a discussion on the procedures and suitability for individual patients. Our primary focus is on safe and gentle environment for your dental care. We will guide you through your treatments with a high level of care and attention. You can be assured you will be treated with respect, understanding and compassion at all times - our skills and expertise mean you are in the best possible hands.
